Quick Answer: What Are Perimeter Water Solutions?
A perimeter water solution is a complete waterproofing system installed around the entire perimeter of a foundation to stop groundwater and surface water from entering a basement. A full system includes a waterproof membrane, perforated weeping tile, drainage stone, a sump pump, and a backwater valve — working together to manage hydrostatic pressure and redirect water safely away from the home. Perimeter solutions are installed either from the exterior (excavating to the footing) or interior (sub-floor drainage), with costs ranging from $90–$250 per linear foot. Every Dryshield perimeter water solution is backed by a Lifetime Transferable Warranty.

How Perimeter Water Solutions Work

Basement water problems are caused by hydrostatic pressure — the force water exerts when it builds up against your foundation. A foundation wall can experience over 1,400 pounds of pressure per square foot at 6 feet below grade. Once that pressure exceeds your foundation’s ability to resist water, moisture is forced through cracks, joints, and porous concrete.
A perimeter water solution addresses the problem at its source: instead of trying to seal water out from one spot, it manages water around the entire foundation by giving it a controlled path to drain away — relieving pressure before it can do damage.
The 5 Components of a Complete Perimeter Water Solution
Every Dryshield perimeter water solution — whether installed from the exterior or interior — includes these five integrated components working as a system:
- Waterproof Membrane: A rubberized elastomeric or peel-and-stick membrane (commonly Aqua Bloc 770-06 or Delta-MS dimple board) applied to the exterior foundation wall. Stops water before it touches the concrete.
- Weeping Tile (Drainage Pipe): A 4-inch high-density polyethylene (HDPE) perforated pipe installed at the foundation footing, wrapped in a rot-proof filter sock to prevent silt clogging.
- Clean Drainage Stone: 19mm (3/4-inch) washed gravel surrounding the weeping tile — never angular crushed stone, which compacts and fails. Lets water flow freely into the pipe.
- Sump Pump & Pit: A submersible 1/3 to 1/2 HP cast-iron pump in a sealed pit, with check valve and battery backup. Removes collected water and pumps it safely away from the foundation.
- Backwater Valve: A check valve installed in the sanitary sewer line that prevents municipal sewer water from backing up into your basement during heavy storms or sewer overload.
Exterior vs Interior Perimeter Water Solutions
There are two ways to deliver a complete perimeter water solution: from outside the foundation (exterior) or inside the basement (interior). Both protect the entire perimeter, but they suit different homes.
| Factor | Exterior Perimeter | Interior Perimeter |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per linear foot | $100–$250 | $90–$150 |
| Stops water at the foundation wall | Yes — before contact | Manages after entry |
| Excavation required | Yes — full perimeter dig | No exterior digging |
| Lifespan | 20–50+ years | 15–30+ years |
| Works on block foundations | Yes | With dimple membrane |
| Best for | Permanent prevention, block, finished basements | Targeted repair, semi-detached, limited yard access |
Perimeter Water Solutions by Foundation Type
Poured Concrete Foundations
The most repair-friendly foundation type. Both interior and exterior perimeter solutions work reliably. Crack injection can supplement perimeter work for single-point repairs.
Cinder Block / Concrete Block Foundations
The most challenging foundation type. Water travels laterally through hollow block cores. Block foundations need either (a) full exterior perimeter waterproofing or (b) interior perimeter solution with a wall-to-floor dimple membrane. Crack injection alone does not work.
Stone & Heritage Foundations
Pre-1940 stone foundations have deteriorating mortar joints. Interior perimeter solutions with dimple membrane are the standard approach — exterior excavation risks undermining old stonework. Common in Toronto Cabbagetown, downtown Hamilton, Fergus, Elora, and rural heritage homes.
Brick & Masonry Foundations
Found in some pre-1900 homes. Highly porous and prone to moisture. Generally require interior perimeter solution with a vapour barrier system to protect the masonry from continued moisture damage.

When You Need Perimeter Water Solutions
Not every basement leak requires a full perimeter system. A single foundation crack or one isolated leak source can often be repaired for $600–$2,500 using crack injection or hydraulic cement. However, you need a complete perimeter water solution when:
- Water enters from multiple locations — multiple walls, multiple cracks, or the floor/wall joint all leaking
- You have a cinder block, stone, or heritage foundation — targeted repairs don’t work on these foundations long-term
- Existing weeping tile has failed — collapsed or silted clay tile from pre-1980 homes
- Your basement is being finished — you can’t risk repeat failures behind drywall and flooring
- Chronic efflorescence or mold — ongoing moisture indicates systemic water pressure
- Annual spring melt flooding — a high water table needs a full system to manage
- Cottage or rural property near water — seasonal water table fluctuations require active management
- Previous waterproofing attempts have failed — spot repairs and paint sealers indicate a deeper issue
Materials & Specifications
Quality matters. Dryshield uses industrial-grade materials that exceed Ontario Building Code minimums:
- Rubberized Membranes: Aqua Bloc 770-06 (modified bitumen) for exterior; Delta-MS dimple board for interior wall protection
- Weeping Tile: 4-inch HDPE perforated pipe with rot-proof filter sock to prevent silt clogging (the #1 failure point in pre-1980 clay tile)
- Drainage Stone: 19mm clear washed gravel — never angular crushed stone (which compacts under load)
- Sump Pumps: 1/3 to 1/2 HP cast-iron submersible pumps with vertical float switches; battery backup systems use marine deep-cycle batteries with smartphone alerts
- Crack Repair Resins: Polyurethane (for active leaks; expands 20x) or epoxy (for structural cracks)
- Backwater Valves: Mainline normally-open or normally-closed valves per municipal code (City of Toronto, Region of Peel, Halton Region requirements vary)

- Halton Region: Covers Oakville, Burlington, Milton, Halton Hills
- York Region: Backwater valves up to $1,200, sump pumps up to $1,250
- City of Windsor: Up to $2,800 per property
- Most rural Ontario townships: Limited or no subsidy programs
Maintenance & Lifespan
A Dryshield perimeter water solution requires minimal maintenance:
- Sump pump: Test quarterly by pouring water into the pit. Clean the pit annually. Replace the pump every 7–10 years before failure.
- Battery backup: Replace the marine battery every 4–5 years.
- Backwater valve: Inspect annually for debris. Most valves last 15–25 years.
- Membrane & weeping tile: No maintenance needed when buried below grade.
- Exterior grading: Maintain a 1-inch-per-foot slope away from the foundation for the first 6 feet. Re-grade as soil settles.
With proper maintenance: exterior perimeter systems last 20–50+ years; interior perimeter systems last 15–30+ years. Dryshield’s Lifetime Transferable Warranty covers the work for as long as you own the home.
Lifetime Transferable Warranty
Every Dryshield perimeter water solution — interior or exterior — comes with our Lifetime Transferable Warranty. The warranty stays with the home for as long as you own it AND transfers to the next owner at no charge when you sell. A tangible asset on your home’s listing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a perimeter water solution?
A perimeter water solution is a complete waterproofing system installed around the entire perimeter of a foundation. It includes a waterproof membrane, perforated weeping tile pipe, drainage stone, sump pump and pit, and a backwater valve. It can be installed exterior (excavated) or interior (sub-floor drainage).
How is a perimeter water solution different from a French drain?
A French drain is a generic term for a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe. Perimeter water solutions use French drain principles at the foundation footing but combine it with a wall membrane, sump pump, and backwater valve as a complete waterproofing system — not just drainage in isolation.
How long does a perimeter water solution last?
Exterior systems last 20 to 50+ years; interior systems last 15 to 30+ years. Dryshield’s Lifetime Transferable Warranty covers the work for as long as you own the home and transfers to the new owner when you sell.
Do I need exterior or interior perimeter waterproofing?
Exterior is the gold standard but more expensive and disruptive. Interior is often right for semi-detached homes, properties with limited yard access, budgets under $15,000, or finished basements where excavation isn’t practical. We assess both during a free in-home inspection.
Will a perimeter water solution stop sewer backup?
Not by itself — that requires a backwater valve installed in the sanitary sewer line. A complete Dryshield perimeter water solution can include a backwater valve as part of the system. Many municipalities offer rebates: Toronto up to $1,250, Peel up to $1,500.
Can a perimeter water solution be installed in winter?
Interior perimeter solutions can be installed year-round because the work happens indoors. Exterior solutions typically require unfrozen soil and are scheduled April through November. Emergency response for active flooding: 365 days a year.
Will a perimeter water solution increase home resale value?
Yes. A documented, warrantied perimeter water solution is a major selling point. Home inspectors flag wet basements as deal-killers. Dryshield’s Lifetime Transferable Warranty transfers to the new owner at no charge — a concrete resale asset.
Do I need a permit for a perimeter water solution?
Interior solutions typically don’t require a permit in most Ontario municipalities. Exterior solutions with excavation deeper than 1.2 meters usually do. Dryshield handles all required permits.
Can a perimeter water solution be installed without excavation?
Yes — the interior version requires no exterior excavation. We break out a strip of concrete along the basement perimeter, install perforated pipe and drainage stone, tie into a sump pit, and re-pour concrete. The exterior version requires full excavation to the footing.
